The Syllabus (~10 Minutes)
So we are essentially going over the table of contents here, and I appreciate a "what to expect" kind of thing. Colt lets the user know right upfront that there isn't a lot of coding that is happening until we get to the Intro to HTML section. He talk about something called "Bootstrap" and talks about making projects, and I have to admit, it sounds a little scary...
He does talk about how the JavaScript (JS) portion of the course is interesting, so I will make sure to stick with him. He does claim, though, that everything involves HTML and CSS to some degree, but once we get into JS, we will be building "robust" apps and not just web sites. So I'm pretty stoked about that.
I'm pretty stoked that at some point we will make a game, and I am also stoked that he refers to it as a "legit project."
Moving from front-end to back-end seems scary. Seems evenly split, though. Honestly, I'm not even sure what "back-end" is. Please, no jokes. :-p
Some notes:
- NodeJS, I have heard about this - What is it?
- "Not stuck making tiny toys for the entire course"
- Yelp clone! Authorization! This is the stuff I'm excited about.
- Use "routing" to build a blog app
- Cleaning up is part of the process (cleaner, shorter, etc.) re-writing and re-organizing
- User permissions - Authentication
- Can't mess with someone else's stuff
- "Much less intimidating than it might seem; don't have to be thinking ahead"
- Has "optional" lectures - I won't skip anything.
- Come up for air occasionally - Where did we come from? Where will we go?
- Gives printer friendly versions of slides - How cool!!!
So that's about that. I have a few speculations as to how things will go. But overall, I have a good idea of how I'm going to feel about this course as I go through it. I think I'm ready!
Wish me luck!!!
